Word games are always fun to play, whether you are on the go or relaxing at home. They help you increase your vocabulary and hone your spelling skills.

7 best free word games

Google Play Store is full of word games in the form of word searches, crosswords, scrabble, and more. To save you the trouble of sorting through multiple options, we’ve picked out some of the most awesome word games available for free on Android. Each of them has a rating of 4.5+ on the Play Store.

Let’s check them out.

1. Wordalot

Wordalot adds a twist to the popular crossword genre by using pictures as clues. It brings more fun to the conventional crossword puzzle. You will need to fill in the blanks to complete the word by deciphering the clue given in the picture.

The difficulty of the game increases as you progress to the next level.

You get 2 coins when you complete each level and these can be used to get clues. There is a practice Ask friends tab under the picture which allows you to share the puzzle with your friends through various apps. The user interface is also user-friendly and not too cluttered.

However, it would have been better if it allowed you to shuffle the letters as it helps you guess the word much faster.

2. Word Brain

With Word brain, you will have to form a word from the letters by dragging them. You will have to drag the letters in the correct order to clear the grid. It’s pretty straightforward at first because you only have four letter (2×2) words. However, as you move to the next step, the puzzles get more difficult with longer words.

As you progress through the game, you collect points which can then be used to buy clues when you get stuck. As you quickly go through the initial states, the game becomes more addicting.

WordBrain also has a cool feature that lets you create your own puzzles to share with your friends. The app is quite colorful and works well.

3. Word landscapes

When you start to play Word landscapes, it makes you feel like you are sitting on nature’s lap with soothing music and beautiful backgrounds. The gameplay is pretty straightforward. You have to slide a given set of letters to form words.

In addition, these words are placed in the form of a crossword puzzle. The different levels are also named after various natural elements such as Forest, Sunrise, Sky, etc.

Similar to other games, you get rewards in the form of coins which can be used to buy hints when you get stuck. The app is quite attractive and also helps you calm down with relaxing music. It is a pleasant and calming game to play after a long day at work.

4. Ruzzle

Ruzzle will indeed muzzle your brain. You will need to find as many words as possible in two minutes. Simply slide over the scrambled letters to form words and use bonus tiles to collect more points than your opponent.

You can challenge random players or play with your Facebook friends. There is also a training mode which will help you master the skills.

The game is played over three rounds. Each round can be played when it suits you. The 2 minute time limit increases the excitement and also brings out the competitive aspect of the game when you challenge a friend.

5. Login word

As the name suggests, in Word Connect, you will have to slide between different letters to form words. It’s more of a relaxing game as there is no time limit. You can just keep it handy as a side activity while watching TV.

Word Connection

The initial puzzles up to Level 16 are fairly easy, but they get more difficult as you progress.

You will be rewarded with coins as you complete chapters and solve bonus words which you can then use to purchase clues. Moreover, this game takes less time than other word games. You can even shuffle the words when you’re stuck.

There are no ads in the app initially, but as you level up you will see ads after each level. Fortunately, the ads are only in the form of photos and not videos.

6. Bonza

Bonza is a fun crossword game that uses word search, puzzle, and trivia. The app will give you clues to organize the word jigsaw. You will need to move them accordingly.

I loved this game because it is doubly difficult. You have to figure out the theme from the given clue and then guess the words. The interface is quite elegant and offers the feeling of solving crosswords.

You can also create your own puzzles by giving hints and answers. Once done, the app will generate a puzzle from the given words and you can rearrange them before making it public.

7. WordWhizzle

Last but not least, there is WordWhizzle which gives you a topic and the first task is to find the hidden words associated with the topic. There will be a different topic for each level.

I liked the clean tone and straightforward user interface of the app, which isn’t too hard on your eyes. However, it is better to turn off the background sound while you are playing, as it becomes annoying.

Video ads will appear after you complete each level. As you progress the game becomes more difficult and you will have to find more words in a puzzle.
